(A little late...) Makeover Monday: 30 pounds, 3 inches.

Last year at this time when I was starting work at South Moon Under, I was wearing a size 30/31 in jeans and usually a large in most shirts while weighing in between 155-160 pounds at 5'1"). The photo on the left was from June 2012, the middle was from late October 2012, and the one on the right was from about a week ago. I'm currently hovering around 125 pounds at the moment and now wearing a size 26-27 in jeans and usually a medium in most tops (sometimes a small). It's crazy how losing 30 pounds can change your life.

The second part of this "self-makeover" addition is that I took a plunge and cut off over 3 inches of hair. For you long haired gals, that's really not a lot but when you've been rocking a faux-hawked pixie cut - 3 inches is a big deal. I've really been digging Miley Cyrus' short crop with the shaved/super short styles. After consulting my original stylist Michele back in VA (for MAJOR hair decisions, she has to be consulted because we go way back), I found an awesome stylist through Salon Apprentice who was looking for a client wanting a short, edgy cut. I recently had a trim at another hair institute on Thursday but the stylist and educator really tried to make my look super soft and feminine and I just wasn't happy after I had left. Yes, I am a girly girl (makeup, nails, etc.) but I've got some edge. After a few texts, I trekked out to SoHo and met Hannah at Alibi NYC. Immediately we just clicked and I was put at ease. As someone who works in the fashion industry, my look and appearance is vital to my success. Hannah and I discussed my goals and visions for my hair and we decided to go for a sexy mohawk that followed the elongated S-curve of my hair's growth pattern. And here's the final result:

A Saturday afternoon/evening in the city...

I love being a North Bronx resident - I have the convenience of being a subway or Metro-North ride away into the city (by city I mean "Manhattan proper") but still close enough to work at my store in Yonkers at the edge of Westchester. That being said, it's rarity to have a Saturday off work in the land of retail management so of course I ventured into the city. My new friend Sharain from Cameo Sisters Design was showcasing her awesome jewelry at The Real Designer Market in SoHo so I had to check that out! I ended up scoring this amazing skull necklace and new earrings and bracelet made from this amazing vintage brass chain. Photos will be coming soon for my new earrings and bracelet but Sharain's sister was sweet enough to take a photo of my new necklace with my phone for me. Don't forget to follow Cameo Sisters Design on Facebook - her website is coming very soon so you can purchase her goodies online but if you're in the NYC area, you can find out where she'll be located each weekend!

Sharain suggested that I check out the Brooklyn Museum for their First Saturdays event since I had no solid plans and I was on a "choose your own adventure" path for the rest of my afternoon. Every first Saturday of the month the Brooklyn Museum opens it's doors for free from 5:00pm onward. Programs, art, music, and people! Next time I need to bring my camera (and not just my phone) because it was also fashion bloggers heaven for people watching! The exhibit that struck me the most was "Gravity And Grace" by El Anatsui. The works in this exhibit are impressive and larger than life so I decided to at least photograph some close-ups of the amazing detail.

I ended my night meeting up with some new friends at a bar in the Upper East Side for some karaoke, conversation, and a couple of cocktails (and by "a couple of cocktails," I had only two because I know you're reading this mother dearest). I've learned that I have the best adventures in the city when you wander as you go along even if getting back home to the north Bronx is a b*tch sometimes due to all the changes in subway work. But I still love NYC and reppin' the north-north-Bronx!

My life the past year (and starting over...).

Sometimes life gets in the way of blogging. Simple as that. I admit I've taken more than my fare share of multi-month hiatuses but a over a year?! I've sort of filled the blogging void with Instagram-ing, Twitter-ing, and a bit of Facebook. You know you haven't updated your Tumblr in ages when you come home for a visit (more on "coming home" in a moment) and your mother says "Lindsay, your last Tumblr post was in December!" That being said, a lot has happened in the last year. I started working for an amazing company (South Moon Under), lived in two new states after being a Virginia resident for almost 30 years, and successfully helped open two new store locations with said amazing company.

  • Mid-to-Late January 2012 - Began recruitment/interview process for South Moon Under.
  • February 6, 2012 - First day of work at South Moon Under as their second assistant at our Short Pump location in Richmond, VA.
  • March, 2012 - Learned of upcoming store openings outside of VA and growth opportunities.
  • April 2, 2012 - Interviewed with the store manager of the first tri-state location scheduled to open end of May/beginning of June.
  • April 20, 2012 - Received the call that I was offered the job as the full-time second assistant at the Montclair, NJ store. That day was a wealth of emotions - telling my family, telling my friends, and then celebrating my friend Margot's 30th birthday. An awesome day nonetheless though I cried a ton.
  • May 4, 2012 - Drove to NYC the first time EVER and just about crapped myself on the BQE. Jeebus. NYC drivers are not VA drivers, y'all. Big props to my friend Matt and his roomie Baly for letting me crash with them that weekend.
  • May 5, 2012 -  Drove to Montclair, NJ for the first time. Apartment hunted. Wasn't "in love" with said apartment but it was within reason for rent/budget.
  • May 7, 2012 - Drove back to VA with horrible traffic. Thankful for my bestie Michelle for letting me chill at her place in Ashland for a few because I needed a hug like no ones business.
  • May 8 - May 18, 2012 - CRUNCH TIME. Packing, hugs, goodbyes, cocktails, madness.
  • May 19, 2012 - Packed my crap in a Penske truck (BIG THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED) and had my friends Margot and Danny help me move to NJ.
  • May 20, 2012 - Had the pleasure of taking Margot and Danny all around NYC that afternoon before they drove back to VA late that night.
  • End of May - Store opening madness began... Met a lot of great girls, did a lot of bonding, and experienced a lot of hard work.
  • June 2, 2012 - First location of South Moon Under in Montclair, NJ opens! Took a ton of photos on Instagram that day.
  • July 19, 2012 - After working like a crazy person but enjoying every minute of it, I found out I was going to be the first assistant manager at our new location in Yonkers at Westchester's Ridge Hill.
  • July 25, 2012 - 12:00am - Celebrated my birthday at my fave "hole in the wall" and the bartender poured me Jameson and played MGMT's "Electric Feel." Odd to feel the birthday love from strangers.
  • End of July 2012 - Whirlwind weekend to go back home to Richmond, VA and visit for my 30th birthday.
  • August 2012 - Worked "two jobs" by spending my time at our Montclair store and starting the hiring process of our Ridge Hill location. *phew* That was a month for sure...
  • September 7, 2012 - FIRST NEW YORK STORE OPENS!!!
  • October 18, 2012 - Survived our Grand Opening party and had a blast! Met my marketing team girls - love those two!
  • November 24, 2012 - My car died and the engine blew up as I was on the bridge on I-80 crossing the Hackensack River.
  • End of November - Beginning Of December - Spent my time on trains, subways, and buses. Found an apartment in Woodlawn in the Bronx borough of NYC.
  • December 9, 2012 - Moved to NYC!!! (Well, Woodlawn but still... NYC bitches!)
  • December, 25 2012 - My friend Jessica came to visit for Christmas and New Year's and I will always be thankful I didn't spend my first Christmas alone.  :-)
  • January 1, 2013 - Didn't get home 'til 10:30am after being out to a bar, an after hours bar, and then someone's apartment... New Year's Eve was a "bender" for sure but AMAZING.

And folks, that's just 2012...

2012 was the star of "starting over" and I'm ready to call NYC home for a little bit longer... Even if sometimes this city brings me down a little bit sometimes, I know this is where I need to be. I always dreamed of being here so I'm still in shock that I'm here sometimes.
